Neuroscience of Music

Overview

In summer 2024, I was accepted to the Bethel Summer Science Institute, where I researched The Emotional Resonance of Music: Exploring the Interplay of Frequency, Empathy, and Therapeutic Effects. Under the mentorship of Professor Dwight Krehbiel, Ph.D., I investigated how different musical frequencies evoke emotional responses in the brain and their potential therapeutic benefits. Using wearable biosensors and participant surveys, I collected data to study how specific sounds influence mood, stress, and overall well-being. The research showed that music can synchronize emotions and foster connection, with sad music in particular helping emotional coherence and well-being. These findings point to promising applications in therapy and meditation.

Presenting my work at the AZ Bioscience Awards and the Regional Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AZSEF) qualified me to advance to the state level, and later, the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) gave me the chance to share my insights with experts and deepen my understanding of music’s powerful impact on mental health.

Personal importance of this work

This project brought together my passions for neuroscience, music, and health innovation. I learned how to design studies, analyze physiological and psychological data, and communicate scientific ideas clearly. Presenting at state and national levels reinforced the importance of sharing research beyond the lab and motivated me to continue exploring the link between science and well-being.
