University Of Arizona - Phoenix - Free Mobile Health Screenings

Overview

After extensive research and outreach, Connect2Health partnered first with the University of Arizona Phoenix Mobile Health Unit (PHX MHU) for community health fairs, free public health screenings, and mobile clinics serving underserved populations. At these events, I performed anthropometric measurements including blood pressure, blood sugar, BMI, HIV tests, cholesterol tests, hemoglobin A1C, as well as osteoporosis and mental health screenings for Latino, Hispanic, and LGBTQ+ communities.

Personal Importance of Work

This hands-on experience was pivotal in clarifying my passion for service through healthcare. It showed me what activities I truly valued and why. That “why” came down to the feelings of contentment and satisfaction I experienced after volunteering, especially during direct patient interactions. I found great joy in connecting personally with patients, often chatting in Spanish to ease their anxiety while helping them complete health questionnaires and medical history forms. These small moments showed me how connection and empathy can build trust and comfort.

Working with PHX MHU also taught me the importance of confidently sharing my ideas and advocating for improvements to make our team more effective. This experience deepened my commitment to serve through healthcare and strengthened my passion to become a physician dedicated to increasing equity and caring for marginalized populations in my community.
